By the imprint "Schirmer Art Books", the publishing house starts its activity in
English speaking countries, with an initial program of twelve English language editions.
1991
With "Pontormo - Zeichnungen" (Pontormo - Drawings), two years later followed by "Fresken und Gemälde" (Frescoes and Paintings)
and the big, two volume catalogue for the Berlin exhibition "Rembrandt - Der Meister und seine Werkstatt" (Rembrandt - The
Master and his School), the series of old masters is significantly enhanced.
1992
A Stars and Stripes year. International show business stars photographed by major star photographers - this Schirmer/Mosel
tradition continues with the unusual "Notorious" by Herb Ritts. At the same time, the big Robert Mapplethorpe monograph, an
international coproduction that attracts world-wide attention, appears in a German language edition, with an essay by Arthur C.
Danto. Meanwhile, the American philosopher and art historian Thomas McEvilley critically reflects the contemporary discussion on
the theory of art in "Kunst und Unbehagen (Art and Discomfort). The first volume of the "Catalouge Raisonné of Paintings" by the
great American painter Cy Twombly, edited by Heir Bastian, is completed.
1993
Again, the German public is introduced to one of the greatest photographers of our time in an unusual self-statement: Richard
Avedon's "An Autobiography". The opulent picture monograph "Maria Callas - Gesichter eines Mediums" (Maria Callas - Faces of a
Medium) erects a visual monument to one of the greatest stars of this century.
1994
With "Woodstock '69", foreword by Jerry Garcia and two Madonna books - "The Girlie Show" and "Madonna Megastar", with an essay
by Camille Paglia - this year's emphasis is on pop culture. The publication of Milton H. Greene's Marilyn photographs - "Milton's
Marilyn" - mark a world premiere. The first book on fashion photographer Nick Knight - night-blue, velvety "Nicknight" -
provides a survey of the photographer's 15 years of work. David Lynch's "Images" reflects, once again, the correlation of
contemporary art in cinema. |
