
1976
With "Beuys - Coyote", the first publication of photographs by Bernd and Hilla
Becher who specialise in the serial documentation of industrial buildings, and a monograph
on the photographic work of Herbert List, the publishing house acquires status in the
field of photography d'auteur.
In the following years, Schirmer/Mosel develops a series of big monographs on the work of
famous photographers of the 19th and 20th century, such as Joseph Albert, Herbert List,
Rodchenko, Nadar, Charles Nègre, Moholy-Nagy, Raoul Haussmann, Man Ray, Weegee.
1978
The first international success is the publication of the big monograph "Fotos und
Fotogramme" (Photos and Photograms) by Moholy-Nagy, simultaneously published in
France, the Netherlands, Great Britain and the US. "Sleepless Nights" lays the
foundation for a lasting collaboration with international masters of erotic photography
such as Helmut Newton.
1979
The first volume of "Theorie der Fotografie" (Theory of Photography) appears, a
three volume edition by Wolfgang Kemp completed in 1983.
1980
The editorial reconstruction of August Sander's oeuvre is completed by "August Sander
- Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts" (August Sander - People of the 20th Century)
containing 431 photographic portraits. Today, the book is available in French, Italian and
Japanese editions.
1981
With a book on Hanna Schygulla, for which Rainer Werner Fassbinder wrote an essay,
Schirmer/Mosel launches its activities in filmbooks.
1983
With Robert Mapplethorpe's first book "Lady Lisa Lyon", a photographic mise en
scène of the body aesthetic of the famous female body builder, Schirmer/Mosel starts the
exclusive editorial presentation of the soon-to-be internationally acclaimed American
photographer. Today, his work is available in six Schirmer/Mosel books ...
